This artwork symbolises the Aboriginal people, but most importantly, the thousands of Aboriginal people who have died during the many conflicts on our land and abroad.
The Artwork itself makes up the Aboriginal Flag, the symbol designed and painted by Aboriginal artist Harold Thomas back in 1971. We all know the significance of the Aboriginal flag …… The Black symbolises our people, the Yellow circle, the sun, the giver of life and our protector, and the Red represents the red earth, the red ochre used in ceremonies and Aboriginal peoples’ spiritual relation to the land. How my artwork differs, is the Poppy (the symbol of the ANZAC both fallen and present) has replaced the red. To me, this symbolises all our people have lost.
From the massacre of our people when the white man first arrived, to those Aboriginal ANZACs that fight and died for the new Australia, to the many Aboriginals who still die today, due to lack of support in our health system, disease, incarceration, alcohol and drug abuse, and those to domestic voilence.
We Should and Shall Remember Them, and not let their suffering and sacrifice, be in vein. My hope is for a better future for al Aboriginal people, may we rise as one and become strong and proud again.
